What character would you like to play? Neville Longbottom.
What does s/he look like? Neville is a 17-year-old boy and that means awkward. His dark hair is still too curly and never seems to do anything he wants, but he's trying to manage. He’s a growing boy so his generous stomach and sides that were the focus of scorn are thinning out as he’s getting taller. And he is getting taller, slowly and surely looking more like his father. Except for his smile. Neville Longbottom has a smile that can light a room up, and that is his mother's fault. More than anything, Neville Longbottom looks like he's growing up. That's obvious from t he width of his shoulders and the size of his shoe, but it's clearest in his eyes. Not done growing yet, but he's getting there. And Neville is starting to work that out too.
Neville’s new wand is Cherry, 10 inches with a core of Unicorn hair. This wand replaced his old wand, his father’s, which was broken in the Department of Mysteries battle.
Magically, what are his/her strengths? Weaknesses? Neville's true strength is in Herbology. It always helps to do something you love. The complexities of leaves, roots and flowers are something Neville understands intrinsically, and the wild variety of botany fascinates him. It’s not flashy like Charms or endlessly practical like Potions, but Neville loves the slow, steady joy of watching something grow. And if he gets to take care of it, nurture it along and nudge it into bloom, then all the better. Potions is Neville’s weakness and always has been. The art of potions is so deeply specific and an entirely component based magic, which confuses Neville. He becomes lost in each specific step, ultimately spoiling the whole. His potions are messy, really.
.What side(s) is your character on? Neville is a dedicated and instrumental member of Dumbledore’s Army, (future Order member.)
Give a paragraph or so describing how your character came to be on that (those) side(s), and when it happened, both in terms of your character's age, and the year. The first opportunity he had to contribute to the fight against Voldemort, Neville took it. Joining Dumbledore’s Army in his fifth year not only gave him the necessary practical experience and lessons for fighting, but also helped build his confidence in himself; an obstacle that could prove detrimental in the throes of war. Participating in the DA taught Neville valuable skills essential for survival, and maybe most important, started letting him forge real connects to the people he was fighting with and for. Because of the skills and confidence gained with the DA, Neville is progressing into a man that his grandmother and parents should be quite proud of.
How does your character feel about the war? The War is a matter that has Neville in all sorts of confusion. Deep inside he has a great want to avenge his parents and fight for his friends and family while maintaining a strong belief that violence shouldn’t be happening at all. He is alarmed that the Ministry has allowed the war has escalated to the point it has. Growing up, The Dark Lord was always a term in passing; something his parents had to deal with. Growing up, Neville could comfort himself knowing that for everything they lost, at least He was gone. . However, Neville continues to develop by leaps and bounds and is readily willing to participate in any way that he can.
How does your character feel about killing? Killing is something Neville wants to avoid at all cost, but somewhere deep inside knows that it’s inevitable during a war. The actually task of killing someone is an immediate relapse to the horrifying image of his parents in St. Mungo’s and the pain they are feeling on a daily basis. It’s something Neville rather not deal with.
What does your character's Boggart turn into? What is his/her Patronus? What might s/he see in the Mirror of Erised? Make sure to give reasons.
Snape used to be his Boggart. Humiliation and worry and disappointing the people he was learning from-that was his biggest fear. A little boy's fear. But now things have changed; now Azkaban has been opened up and war is brewing, and there are much worse things than Snape's disdain. Once upon a time, Bellatrix Lestrange took everything from him when she tortured his parents. In the Department of Mysteries, he saw her. How easily she could have tortured himself, Harry, Ginny, and Luna. She could do it again. That's what his Boggart is now. And it's much harder to laugh at that.
The source of Neville’s patronus comes from a moment in his early childhood that has remained with him throughout his entire life. Visiting the London Zoo was always an exciting event for Neville, who loved to watch the animals from a comfortable distant. One morning while observing the Artic exhibit, his grandmother looked down to him standing at her side and smiled. “You know, Neville, penguins are wonderful animals.” There was a light in her eyes; a happy and hopefully gleam that Neville hadn’t seen before. “They live in the darkest, coldest places of the world yet somehow they manage. They survive by being very loyal to each other and caring for those around them.” The thought put a smile on Neville’s face that he would later recall when conjuring his patronus.
If you asked him what he would see in the Mirror of Erised, he couldn't tell you. Neville is the sort that never knows exactly what he wants. But looking into it, he'd see it and it would be absolutely perfect. Perfect and absolutely ordinary. He and his mum and dad are at the dinner table, eating chicken and potatoes but mostly just talking. Everyday chitchat about school and classes, Alice’s new sewing project. And for once it wouldn't just be Neville talking and the two of them looking at him blankly. For once they would actually be smiling at him, complimenting his plants and flowers, which lay, decorating the room in various jars and pots. There would be a vase of Asian posies in the middle of the table and Frank would grumble that no matter how pretty they looked, they made him sneeze. It would be simple and quiet and perfect. It would be the Longbottoms cozy little house with photos on the wall of them waving from the beach on holiday, Luna smiling absently at the camera while wearing a top hat and Harry laughing at something Hermione had just said. It’s mundane and perfect and what Neville wants more than anything else in the world.
